GWR 2-4-0 Barnum class No 3210, a curved outside-framed
locomotive, stands outside Tyseley's Repair shops on 19th March 1933. William
Dean's design for this locomotive type was still embedded in the mid-Victorian
school and it seems strange to think that in just over a decade Churchward
would be producing his classic 4-6-0 designs that laid the foundation for steam
locomotive design to the end of steam on British Railways. Built at Swindon
works in May 1889 No 3210 remained in service until March 1937 when it was
withdrawn from Wellington shed in Salop to be scrapped by Swindon works.
