GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Widney Manor Station: gwrwm430a
Close up of image "gwrwm430" showing the contractors at work
including the Ruston Bucyrus crane being used to dig the earth and the
temporary track and contractors wagons to move the spoil. The term 'permanent
way' on railways was derived from the need to differentiate between railway
builders' temporary track an extreme illustration of which is evident in this
photograph. On the left a screen has been erected and there is a small train of
six side tipping hopper wagons filled with spoil and hauled by a small petrol
or diesel locomotive at the far end. In the distance near the crane there two
other similar trains of hoppers.
