GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Widney Manor Station: gwrwm432b
Close up of image 'gwrwm432' showing the goods shed and the
signal box whilst a Permanent Way gang inspect the track. PW gangs were
allocated sections of lines along a route and the ganger in charge would be
required to walk the lines throughout his section on a regular basis. Following
this inspection any remedial or preventative maintenance work would be
undertaken in the interval between trains. One of the most common tasks was the
tightening or replacement of the wooden keys that held the rail into the chairs
and the tightening of the screw bolts that held the chair to the sleepers.
