A diagram of the various rambling routes and sleeping
accommodation identified by the Great Western Railway across Shakespeare-land
and the Cotswolds. A special feature of this book of rambles, which I believe
is unique, is the connecting up of all the walks so that they can be used as
walking tours of various lengths. This should be a great boon for a form of
holiday which is becoming increasingly popular with many people, but as usually
indulged in has several drawbacks. One trouble is that it is often difficult to
arrange each day's walk to fit in with opportunities for meals and sleeping
accommodation, and another is that one's enjoyment is often marred by too
slavish sticking to roads, as even experienced walkers do not generally care
about trying out unknown paths, which have a way of petering out, when there is
little spare time in which to reach a suitable place of lodgement for the
night. Although a keen walker myself, I find no pleasure in walking along roads
for long together, and I have therefore taken a great deal of trouble to use
footpaths for the rambles whenever possible.
The diagram at the end of the book will give a comprehensive
idea of all the walks and will show how walking tours of various lengths can be
made out of them. These can be started and finished at any suitable point and
specially cheap Point to Point Walking Tour Tickets can be obtained for them
through the Rambling Federations
