LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Catesby Tunnel: gcct2
An unidentified ex-WD 2-8-0 Austerity locomotive seen at the
head of a long coal train is emitting lots of smoke as it approaches Catesby
Tunnel. The reverse of the photograph gives the engine's running number as
3933. This I understand belongs to an O2 2-8-0 built in November 1923 and
therefore is clearly a mistake. Examining the photograph magnified it would
seem that its most likely to be LNER No 3133 which was built by the Vulcan
Foundry in April 1944 and was numbered 90454 by British Railways and as such
continued in service until June 1965 when it was withdrawn from 36E Retford
shed.
