One of the many steam shovel's in action tipping its load into a horse drawn contractors wagon. The horse drawn wagon on the left is different to others seen working in a cutting having higher sides. This is because it is carrying coal used by the steam shovel. Note the poorly laid contractor's temporary way and primitive points, the navvy trimming excess spoil and the lamps hung from the wooden poles.
