Building the last Main Line Railway
Catesby Tunnel and Viaduct: gcrcs164
An excellent photograph captured during construction of
Catesby viaduct, a twelve arch structure which carried the London Extension
across the infant River Leam in Northamptonshire. Running beside the brick
piers which are slowly rising from the valley floor can be seen a line of the
contractor's railway: a steep climb for the small locomotives tasked with
hauling materials to and from the construction site.
