Building the last Main Line Railway
Catesby Tunnel and Viaduct: gcrcs165
Looking down from the top of a spoil heap towards a section
of circular timber shaft formwork. This would have been used to provide the
shape of the brick lined air shafts which were sunk along the length of Catesby
tunnel. At the top of the picture are a number of laden Griff coal wagons: the
Nuneaton coal mine was clearly providing the coal required for the steam
locomotives, shovels and pumps used on the tunnel's construction.
