LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Rugby Central Station: gcrcs214
Internal view of Rugby Station Signal Cabin showing the
lever frame and signal diagram used to control this section of track. Each line
was divided into a section of track (in railway parlance called a block) to
enable the safe and efficient operation of trains travelling on the line and to
avoid collisions. Each section (block) was under the control of a signal box
which would be responsible for accepting trains from either side into its
section. They would communicate to the other signal box on either side by bell
codes and by telephone. By accepting each train from an adjacent block and
passing it on to the block on the other side trains would progress along a
route safely and with the minimum of stoppages.
