LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Rugby Central Station: gcrcs217
Looking in the direction of London along the siding used by
open wagons needing access to the fixed crane. The crane was fixed in position
and would be limited to a maximum weight lift which is not known but probably 5
or 10 tons. The original hand operated crane appears to have been replaced with
a mechanical crane making the job of lifting the timber much easier. The
coaches on the left are standing on the passing loop and thought to be part of
one of the local passenger sets used on services to Nottingham. The
unidentified British Railways Class 9F 2-10-0 passing the signal box is heading
a train of empty coal wagons being returned to the coal fields of Nottingham
and South Yorkshire.
