Building the last Main Line Railway
Rugby to Barby: gcrcs3b
Close up view of image 'gcrcs3' showing a team of two horses
being used to move the fully loaded contractors wagon. The line would have been
built by first removing the turf and then the laying of the 'temporary way',
the contractors lines, along the route. This work allowing the excavated
material from cuttings to be transported via the temporary way to be tipped to
the area where an embankment would be required. The wooden trough on the right
would have been used to either hold water or feed for the horses. The raised
trough would have made feeding and watering the second horse easier as it would
be able to feed without having the harness connecting it to the horse in front
removed. There also appears to be empty bags beneath the trough which could
have held their feed.
