LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Rugby Central Station: gcrcs58
An unidentified GCR 4-4-0 hauls one of the first trains to
leave Rugby's GC station when opened in 1899. The three coach train was all
that was required to service semi-fast services throughout most of the lines
life. Whilst the directors had thought they would be able to attract passengers
from their competitors such as the Midland Railway and the LNWR this did not
happen. The fact that the line south of Rugby did not serve major population
centres did not help either so the line made most of its revenue from the
transportation of goods.
