LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Staverton Road: gcrsr28
LNER 4-6-0 Class B17/4 No 2860 'Hull City' throws out a lot
of unburnt coal as it passes Staverton Road signal cabin in 1946 on a
Marylebone to Leicester stopping train. Steve Banks writes, 'A classic use
of an Ordinary Passenger train heading Non Passenger Coaching Stock. In this
case added behind the tender are: a GWR Siphon, a horse box that I cannot
identify, and an LNER 4w passenger brake van.' In the immediate post war
period quality coal was reserved only for the more prestigious workings so the
smoke may in fact reflect the use of 'slack' which was basically pieces of
gravel sized coal. Built at Darlington in June 1936 No 2860 was renumbered by
the LNER in 1946 as No 1660 and again as No 61660 by British Railways post 1948
which it carried until June 1960 when it was withdrawn from March shed.
