LNER Route: Leicester to Marylebone
Staverton Road: gcrsr30
LNER 4-6-0 Class B17/4 No 2862 'Manchester United' is seen
working hard at the head of a down express train circa 1946. Built by Robert
Stephenson & Company in January 1937 No 2862 was renumbered by the LNER in
1946 as No 1662 and again by British Railways post 1948 as No 61662 which it
retained until it was withdrawn from service in December 1959 from 30A
Stratford shed.
Bernard Dodd writes, 'you might be interested to know
that Heritage Railway Magazine reported on 25th January 2014 that around two
million supporters of Manchester United across the world are to be asked to
contribute to the £1.8 million project which will recreate
scrapped LNER B17 4-6-0 No 61662 Manchester United. The scheme is being
promoted by the North British Locomotive Preservation Group, which aims to have
the locomotive built to main line standards as an ambassador both for the steam
movement and the football club itself. It believes that the locomotive could be
built within five years'.
