Another view of 'Top' shed on 12th February 1940 showing the building work remaining at the northern end of the depot. To take this photograph the photographer has remained in the same position as image 'gwrhd677' but swung the camera nearly 90 degrees. The access to the canal basin is located just under the elevated offices seen in the distance. (A better view of the access to the canal basin is seen in image 'gwrhd679'). The 'Top' shed is now nearly complete some eighteen months after work had started which must be considered a reasonable performance considering Britain had declared war on Germany on 3rd September 1939. The cartage deck under the canopy was, according to Frank Popplewell, not normally used for regular traffic but utilised for delayed "A waiting instructions" consignments and special high value goods such as tobacco.
