Sentinel No 13 at Old Oak Common Shed in brand new condition, awaiting application of livery and cast number plate

In 1926, the Great Western Railway ordered two patent geared steam locomotives with vertical engines and boilers from the Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd of Shrewsbury. This photograph shows No 13 (Sentinel Works No 6514 / GWR lot 247) at Old Oak Common Shed in brand new condition, awaiting application of livery and cast number plate. This locomotive was delivered in August 1926 and taken on to the company's stock in December 1926. The locomotive's boiler operated at 275 lbs, which delivered a tractive effort of 7,200 lb. The locomotive had poppet valve gear and chain drive with a gear ratio of 1:2.23. This gave the locomotive a maximum speed of 18 mph and at 500 rpm it developed over 100 bhp. With a total weight of 20 tons the locomotive could work anywhere (route category uncoloured).

No 13 worked as a shunter almost exclusively on the Park Royal Trading Estate, with occasional visits on loan to the Lyons factory in Greenford, until it was withdrawn in May 1946. In June 1946 the locomotive was sold to G Cohen Sons & Co Ltd. In 1947, the locomotive was purchased by the Birmingham Small Arms Company for work on their private siding at the Waverley Works in Small Heath, where it worked until withdrawn in July 1949. The locomotive was finally scrapped in 1952.
