Colliery Lines
Coventry Colliery: misc_cc019
Peckett 0-6-0ST Class OX1 'Coventry No 4' is seen whilst out
of steam stabled outside of the Colliery's shed on 1st March 1959. Delivered
new to the Colliery in 1927, this locomotive class was fitted with a spark
arrestor to the chimney due to the steep gradients on the branch line to Three
Spires Junction. When working hard the small embers from the firebox would
otherwise be whipped up the chimney to set of lineside fires, an unacceptable
hazard with nearby housing which grew significantly in the inter-war years.
Coventry Colliery had been said to be one of the most modern in the country
with new houses being built for the miners. By the standards of the time they
were good homes with inside toilets, an unusual facility for working class
housing of that era.
