Joseph Wright & Sons: misc_indust359
Joseph Wright & Sons built several similar standard
gauge (4 8½) four wheel coaches for the Chester &
Birkenhead Railway in 1854. The Birkenhead Railway was jointly vested in the
Great Western and London North Western Railway Companies on 1st January 1860
and its rolling stock was shared between the two companies. Originally built as
a first class coach, the photograph shows it in Great Western Railway livery
and retaining the first class designation on the compartment doors, but it has
a third class coach number - No 719 (It was demoted to third class in June
1882). The coach was eighteen feet one inch long with a ten foot wheelbase.
