British Electricity Authority, Midlands Division 0-6-0 No 10
(RSH7536) is seen in 1967 in a very dirty condition towards the end of its
working life. The British Electricity Authority only existed for a very short
period, from nationalisation in 1948 to 1954 when it was to become the Central
Electricity Authority, its self short lived becoming the Central Electricity
Generating Board in 1957. The builder of the locomotive, Robert Stephenson
Hawthorn (RSH), was formed in September 1937. This was when Robert Stephenson
and Company, based in Darlington, took over the locomotive building department
of Hawthorn Leslie and Company, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The goodwill of
Leeds locomotive builders Kitson & Co. was obtained in 1938. RSH works
numbering began at No 6939, this being the first number following the sum total
of locomotives built by Robert Stephenson & Co. and Hawthorn Leslie, there
being 6938 locomotives in total. RSH became part of the English Electric group
in 1955 with locomotive building at the Newcastle upon Tyne works ending in
1961 and at Darlington in 1964.
