Keith Turton's History of Warwickshire's Industrial Railways, Sidings and Private Owner Wagons

Birmingham Gas Works: misc_kt383

A typical of the style of wagon used by the Department in the last years of the nineteenth century

This is typical of the style of wagon used by the Department in the last years of the nineteenth century. The photo was taken at the Langley Mill works of the wagon builder G.R. Turner, where the wagon was in for repairs. It appears to be one of the two hundred built by Brown and Marshalls (a Birmingham wagon builder) in 1895. The control wheel for the Hunt and Shackleford patent mechanism for working the bottom doors can be clearly seen. 150 of these wagons were allocated specifically for traffic to the Windsor Street works. This example emptied to the Clay Cross collieries in Derbyshire. The steel body appears to be painted either red or medium grey with white letters shaded black. (Photo: Midrail Photos)
