Newdigate Colliery: misc_newd295a
Close up of image 'misc_newd295' showing Newdigate
Colliery's coal screens which could handle loading coal into both road and rail
vehicles. When the colliery first opened all of the coal would have been
dispatched by train whereas from the 1950s onwards a significant amount was by
lorry. Lorries could serve local markets much better than railways which
increasingly had to rely on servicing large scale users such as power stations
etc.
