Nechells Power Station: nechells108
Construction of the coal unloading area outside Nechells
Princes Power Station showing the large Telpher installation for unloading
canal barges and the rail coal tipping facilities in the distance. The extent
of the equipment here gives some idea of the amount of coal required by the
power station. In 1933 the City of Birmingham Electricity Supply Department
purchased almost 400,000 tons of rail transported slack coal from various
collieries and coal factors. This was split between the Power Stations at
Nechells and Hams Hall (the other Power Stations were canal feed). As coal
wagons typically carried 10 tons each, this amounts to over 100 wagons to be
unloaded every day.
