Home From the Seaside

Evening at Yardley Wood - Philip Hawkins, Fellow of the Guild Railway Artists.

The painting illustrates ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle Class No 5072 'Hurricane' at the head of the northbound 'Cornishman' passing through the station in 1960. Built as No 5072 'Compton Castle' by Swindon works to Lot 310 in June 1938, No 5072 was renamed 'Hurricane' in November 1940 which it carried until October 1962 when it was withdrawn from 84A Stafford Road shed in Wolverhampton to be scrapped by Swindon works in April 1963. Its bogie was used for for carrying the Jodrell Telescope's circular track.
