LNWR 4-4-0 No 1914 'Invincible' at Rugby station whilst at the head of a down train to Liverpool circa 1900

LNWR 4-4-0 No 1914 Invincible pauses at Rugby station whilst heading a down train to Liverpool shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. Invincible was a member of Webb's Jubilee class of 4-4-0 four-cylinder compound locomotives of which a total of forty were built from 1897 to 1900. Slightly unusually for the LNWR, the class received a number series, this being No 1901 to No 1940. As with other Webb compounds, they were mechanically unreliable and as a result, Webb's successor, George Whale, rebuilt them as two cylinder simple locomotives of the Renown class, starting with No 1918 Renown in 1908. All rebuilt engines retained their numbers with rebuilding continuing such that at the grouping of 1923, only nine Jubilees remained. These were No 1903, 1904, 1908, 1911, 1912, 1915, 1923, 1927 and 1929. Of these nine locomotives No 1908 Royal George was withdrawn in January 1923, but the remaining eight were allocated the LMS numbers No 5110 No 5117. Two locomotives, No 1904 Rob Roy and No 1923 Agamemnon were withdrawn in 1923, without receiving their new LMS numbers. The LMS rebuilt the remaining six into Renowns in 1924, making the class extinct.
