Winson Green Station: lnwrwg99
A general view of the outside of Winson Green station which
was sited above the railway between the two sets of lines. The station building
was constructed on three sides in brickwork whilst the rear elevation was
constructed in timber. Its believed that this method of construction was
adopted because it reduced both weight and costs. The front elevation sat on
the steelwork used to support the bridge whilst the two sides stood on
foundations buried beneath the platforms. The rear wall however was also
suspended above the tracks and being constructed of timber required a much
lighter steel support than if built in brick. The bus stop on the right was a
typical Birmingham Transport design which, to the author who lived in Coventry,
always helped to convey the impression of being in a foreign land.
