LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth

Ex-LMS 'Horwich Crab' 2-6-0 No 42811 is seen near Atherstone on a down fast freight service on 28th December 1961. The Class E freight is passing masts erected for the forthcoming electrification of the West Coast Main Line although main-line electric services would not reach London until 18th April 1966. Built by Horwich works as LMS No 13111 in May 1929. No 42811 was renumbered by the LMS as No 2811 in May 1935 and again by British Railways in September 1948 and continued in service until July 1962 when it was withdrawn from 6A Chester (Midland) shed.
