LMS Coronation Class 4-6-2 No 6220 'Coronation' is seen in full flight with the down 'Coronation Scot' at Brinklow

LMS Coronation Class 4-6-2 No 6220 'Coronation' is seen in full flight with the down 'Coronation Scot' at Brinklow. Built in June 1936 by Crewe works, No 6220 was built in streamlined form to compete with the LNER's A4 design. The locomotive was renumbered as BR No 46220 in July 1948 and also lost its streamlining because the benefits did not outweigh the negatives, eg extra weight, lack of easy access for routine maintenance, etc. The locomotive was withdrawn in April 1963 from 12B Upperby shed in Carlisle to be scrapped.

The Coronation Class was also known as Princess Coronation Class and were an enlarged and improved version of the LMS Princess Royal Class, hence their numbering continued within the block of numbers commencing 62xx, the last member of the Princess Royal Class being No 6212 'Duchess of Kent'. Twenty-four members of the class were built in streamlined form, though the streamlining was later removed. The non-streamlined locomotives built during 1938 were often referred to as Duchesses, though to enginemen they were often known as Big Lizzies. They were the most powerful passenger steam locomotives ever to be built for the LMS network, estimated at around 3,300 horsepower, making them far more powerful than the diesel engines that ultimately replaced them.
