Ex-LMS 8P 4-6-2 Princess Coronation class No 46221 'Queen
Elizabeth is seen at Gypsy Lane the head of the up 'Royal Scot' express service
to Euston. The sloping top of the smokebox and the gap in the running plate in
front of the cylinders confirm that when first built No 46221 was built as a
streamliner. The locomotive was named in June 1937 after the late Queen Mother,
mother of Queen Elizabeth II, who had recently come to the throne as the wife
of King George VI. Built at Crewe works in June 1937 No 46221 remained in
service until May 1963 when it was withdrawn from Upperby shed in Carlisle to
be scrapped in July 1963 by Crewe works.
