LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth
Trent Valley Lineside - Newbold on Avon: lnwr_nupa1165
LMS 5MT 4-6-0 'Stanier Black 5' No 5289 is seen rounding the
curve at the head of a down special express near Newbold Troughs in August
1937. The description 'Stanier Black 5' or 'Black 5' was used to differentiate
the mixed traffic class from Stanier's 5XP express or Jubilee class known by
some railwaymen - but not all - as red 5's. Built by the Armstrong Whitworth
Company in December 1936 No 5289 remained in service until November 1966 when
it was withdrawn from Colwick shed to be scrapped during May 1967 by J Cashmore
of Great Bridge.
