LMS 5XP 4-6-0 Jubilee class No 5552 'Silver Jubilee' is seen
picking up water whilst at the head of an up express service circa 1938. When
built at Crewe works in December 1934 No 5552 was the first member of a class
of locomotives built by Stanier as an improved version of Fowler's Patriot
class. However on 29th April 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King
George V, the LMS named newly shopped classmate No 5642 'Silver Jubilee'.
As the naming was prestigious in celebrating the monarch's
reign it was felt appropriate that 'Silver Jubilee' should be the first member
of the class and so No 5642 became No 5552. This change resulted in the class
being officially described as the Jubilee class. In this new guise No 5552
remained in service until September 1964 when it was withdrawn from Crewe North
shed to be scrapped in April 1965 by TW Ward Ltd of Beighton near
Sheffield.
