The progress of locomotive development on the ex-LNWR lines had been significant during the 19th century from the original L & B Bury 0-2-2 locomotives to the Webb compounds. The Coal Engine design in some ways reflects the ultimate late 19th century goods engine. However the Stanier 8F, built a little over 35 years later, was a gigantic step forward in comparison, with its GWR early 20th century ancestry being a major factor in the preeminence of the LMS's influence over the design of the BR standards some 15 years after this photograph was taken. Built at Crewe in February 1939 No 8111 was withdrawn from Bolton shed in March 1968 before being scrapped at Drapers Ltd of Hull in July 1968.
