Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 'G1' No 8910 is seen without a wisp of steam or smoke in sight whilst at the head of a long Nuneaton to Leamington freight train in 1947. The locomotive looks in remarkably good condition for a locomotive near to the end of its working life because when the above photograph was taken ,No 8910 was just months away from being withdrawn from Warwick shed in January 1948. Built as LNWR No 2369 at Crewe works in May 1902, No 8910 was rebuilt as a 'G1' in May 1923 and received its LMS number in August 1928. The nationalisation of the railways saw LMS locomotives being renumbered by the addition of 40,000 to their LMS running number. Had the locomotive survived long enough to receive its British Railway's allocated number it would have carried No 48910 on its cab sides. Whereas prior to 1939 a significant number of coal wagons were Private Owner wagons this had ceased with the outbreak of war when, for all intent and purposes, they were nationalised being allocated as common user wagons by the Railway Executive Committee. After the war the nationalisation of the coal mines, gas works and other utility companies, who owned the majority of the Private Owner wagons, together with the railways, meant that for many years few wagons on British Railways were privately owned.
