LMS 5XP 4-6-0 Jubilee class No 5742 'Connaught' is seen at
speed on a six-coach Coventry to Leamington passenger service. Michael Byng
writes, 'Whilst the caption is undated I would suggest that the picture was
taken in the Summer of 1939, when No 5742 and several other members of the
Class, numbered between 5713 and 5742 were allocated to Aston Shed for the
Birmingham to Euston services. No 5742 appears to be carrying the 1936 style
Gill Sans insignia and still has a single chimney. It received a double chimney
at a heavy general overhaul in February 1940, which it carried until 1955'.
Built at Crewe works in December 1936 No 5742 remained in service until May
1965 when it was withdrawn from Kingmoor shed in Carlisle to be scrapped in
August 1965 by the Motherwell Machinery & Scrap Co of Inshaw Works.
