LNWR 2P 4-6-0 No 1703 'Northumberlandshire', an Experiment class locomotive, is seen at the head of a mixed stock down express approaching Shilton station. Philip Millard of the LNWR Society writes 'The first vehicle is one of the four 42ft 0in x 8ft 6in non-corridor brake thirds to P 118 in the old (1895) diagram book. These were supplemented circa1912 but still seem to have been used in (secondary) main-line service until 1920 at least'. Built at Crewe works in December 1909 No 1703 was renumbered as No 5548 by the LMS in June 1926 and remained in service until March 1934 when it was withdrawn from service to be scrapped by Crewe works.
