LNWR 2-4-0 Precedent class No 1182 'Chandos' pilots LNWR 4-6-0 Prince of Wales class No 401 on a down express

LNWR 2-4-0 Improved Precedent class No 1182 'Chandos' pilots LNWR 4-6-0 Prince of Wales class No 401 on a down express in August 1922. The 2-4-0 locomotive was designed by FW Webb with some one hndred and sixty-six locomotives being built in batches at Crewe works from 1887 to 1897 with two further additions being provided in 1898 and 1901 respectively. They were officially rebuilds of ninety-six Newton Class and eighty Precedent Class, though in reality they were 'accountancy' rebuilds, meaning that they were recorded in the asset register as rebuilds for to be charged against revenue rather than against capital, which meant that the LNWR avoided paying tax. All locomotives retained their numbers and names of their predecessors, and as a result the numbering system continued to be completely haphazard.
