LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth
Tamworth Station: lnwr_tam1244
LNWR 4-6-0 Experiment class No 2627 'President Lincoln' is
seen at the head of the 10 05 am Euston to Perth express as it passes a line of
Tamworth Colliery wagons circa 1909. The nearest wagon on the left has a timber
buffer - known as a dumb buffer because it was solid - whilst all the rest have
sprung metal buffers. As the locomotive was built in January 1909 the
locomotive was only recently shopped from Crewe works when seen in this
photograph. Later renumbered by the LMS as No 5510 it remained in service until
May 1935 when it withdrawn from service to be scrapped at Crewe works.
