LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth
Tamworth High Level Station: lnwr_tam1256a.htm
Close up of image 'lnwr_tam1256' showing one of the timber
framed and clad lift shafts built to aid the transfer of mail between the two
sets of platforms. This, and its counterpart on the down platform, were
constructed to the south of the MR station and accessed the MR's down platform.
Parcel and luggage requiring to be transferred from either of the LNWR
platforms to the MR's up platform, utilised the same route and then continued
via the porters barrow crossing at the end of the MR's platforms. Reg Kimber
writes "The lift at Tamworth was primarily used for mail at night. Tamworth
gets a mention in the classic film 'Night Mail' as mail on the West Coast main
line was transferred on to Derby-Bristol and Bristol-Derby trains at
Tamworth."
