LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth
Tamworth Station: lnwr_tam1744
Looking north towards Stafford from the High Level station
with Tamworth's replacement up platform on the right. The lines are from left
to right - down slow, down fast, up fast and up slow. Travelling Post Offices
(TPOs) were heavy users of the station as Tamworth was one of the major mail
interchange points on the railway network. Peter Lee in his book on the Trent
Valley line records that in British Railway days upwards of 2000 mailbags were
dealt with on a nightly basis necessitating 20 General Post Office (GPO)
employees to be based at Tamworth. In addition to the seven TPOs which called
each night, the busiest time being 10 45pm and 1 45 am, Post Office motor
vehicles from Birmingham, Stafford, Leicester, Lichfield and Coventry also
connected to the service.
