Ex-LMS 4-6-2 8P Coronation Class No 46243 'City of of Lancaster' enters Tamworth low level on the up Royal Scot on 12th May 1948

Ex-LMS 4-6-2 8P Coronation Class No 46243 'City of of Lancaster' enters Tamworth low level on the up Royal Scot on 12th May 1948. Its stated that No 46243 received its British Railways number in April 1948, being the only member of the class to carry its BR number when still in streamlined form. The fifthly state of the locomotive seen in the photograph above makes it difficult to confirm although if true one would have expected some evidence of a cleaned panel on the side of the cab. Built by Crewe works in June 1940 No 46243 remained in service until October 1964 when it was withdrawn from 8A Edge Hill shed in Liverpool.
