LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth
Tamworth Station: lnwr_tam3128
Ex-LNWR 0-6-0ST Special Tank No 7379 is seen taking water at
Tamworth Low Level circa 1931. Built by Crewe works in May 1878, No 7379 was
later renumbered by the LMS as No 27379 which it carried until it was withdrawn
from service in October 1936. Designed by John Ramsbottom, the class were a
saddle tank version of his LNWR DX Goods design. A total of 278 locomotives
were built from 1870 onwards, of which five survived to be inherited by British
Railways in 1948. These five were in departmental stock: four being used as
Carriage Department shunters at Wolverton Works and one locomotive being
employed as a shunter at Crewe Works.
