An unidentifiable LMS 'Royal Scot' class locomotive fitted
with an experimental form of smoke deflectors heads an up express at Tamworth.
It wasn't until late 1931, after several bizarre forms of smoke deflectors were
tried on various locomotives to stop drifting smoke obscuring the crew's
forward vision, that the straight sided smoke deflectors were added. These were
later replaced by deflectors with angled top which had proved more effective as
well as visually more attractive. Their reign as the LMS' premier locomotive
was short lived as when Stanier took up post the class were from 1933 onwards
taken off the top-link expresses, being superseded by the LMS Princess Royal
Class and later the LMS Princess Coronation Class Pacifics.
