LMS Route: Rugby to Tamworth
Trent Valley Lineside - Towns Thoms: lnwr_tt1220
LMS 4-6-2 Princess Coronation class No 6228 'Duchess of
Rutland' is seen at the head of an up express entering Town Thoms cutting on
25th May 1939. Built at Crewe works in June 1938 No 6228 remained in service,
having its streamlining removed post-war, and was withdrawn in September 1964
from Crewe North shed to be scrapped in January 1965 by J Cashmore of Great
Bridge.
Despite the the first member of the class being named
'Coronation' and the class being known as the Princess Coronation class, this
class of locomotive is always described today as 'Duchesses'. This is probably
because of the three survivors two were named after Duchesses, No 46229
'Duchess of Hamilton' and No 46233 Duchess of Sutherland with the third
survivor being No 46235 'City of Birmingham' once incarcerated in Birmingham's
Transport Museum and now on show at at the ThinkTank in Birmingham a science
museum part of the Millennium Point complex.
