Ex-LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee class No 45580 'Burma' pilots an unidentified LMS 4-6-0 rebuilt Royal Scot class locomotive on a down express near Cathiron circa 1956. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in October 1934 No 45580 remained in service for just over 30 years being withdrawn from Newton Heath shed in December 1964 to be scrapped by TW Ward Ltd of Beighton in April 1965. Steve Westen writes 'This photo is taken at Cathiron (in the down direction) and shows the old crossing keepers cottage on the up side and Fog Cottages. The bridge in the distance (Bridge 9A) replaced the level crossing in between the keeper’s cottage and the wooden shed on the down side. The crossing keepers cottage has now gone, but Fog Cottages remain'.
