Close up showing Aston's home signal bridge which controlled access to the two lines to Stechford and New Street

Close up of image 'lnwra1495' showing Aston's home signal bridge which controlled access to the two lines to Stechford and New Street. These signals were operated by the 'Bobby' in Aston No 1 signal cabin which was sited behind the photographer, in the 'V' of the junction. The signal cabin seen in the distance beyond the end of the down platform, is Aston No 2 signal cabin whose primary function was to control access to the Lichfield line which branched off to the right immediately after the station. The smoke escaping from the chimney on the left is from the booking office sited at road level. The road level structure which included the booking office was designed so that the latter's chimney was incorporated into the wall above the subway used by passengers to access the up platform.
