Aston Station: lnwra2301A colourisation by Stephen Arrandale of a photograph by DJ
Norton of the view of the entrance to Aston station, still in LMS livery, and
Lichfield Road overbridge on 23rd March 1953. Trams No 678 and No 706 are seen
passing the station whilst working inward and outward 79 services from
Steelhouse Lane to Pype Hayes Park. Within a few months of this photograph
being taken all of Birmingham's trams were withdrawn with routes No 78 and 79
being the very last, closing on 4th July 1953. Tram No 678 was built in 1924
and had seating for 28 people and standing for 35 people whilst Tram No 706 was
built in 1925 with the same seating capacity. Once Birmingham had the fourth
largest tramway network in the UK after London, Glasgow and Manchester with a
total of 843 trams of which a maximum of 825 trams would be in service at any
one time. There were some twenty depots, forty-five main routes and a total
route mileage of 80½ miles. back
