View from Aston No 1 signal cabin towards Vauxhall and Duddeston with the branch to Windsor Street on the right on 23rd March 1962

View from Aston No 1 signal cabin towards Vauxhall and Duddeston with the branch to Windsor Street on the right on 23rd March 1962. This view shows the narrow balcony that was fixed beneath the windows of most LNWR signal cabins. It enabled the signalman to clean his windows in what was a very dirty environment. Clean windows were essential to the safe operation of the railway as maximum visibility was essential. On the left a diesel shunter is standing alongside the wall of Aston shed whilst in the distance is the bridge carrying Long Acre over the line to Vauxhall and Duddeston. On the right on the Windsor branch are catch points, designed to protect the main line from any runaway wagons. On the extreme right are the switch blades for a point leading to a blind siding (see image 'lnwra1494a') to divert runaway wagons from the Windsor Street down line away from the main line.
