British Railways built 4-6-0 'Black Five' No 44685 is seen being oiled as it stands beneath the coaling plant on 25th March 1964

A colourisation of a photograph by Stephen Arrandale of British Railways built 4-6-0 'Black Five' No 44685 being oiled as it stands beneath the coaling plant on 25th March 1964. Built by Horwich works in August 1950, No 44685 was to remain in service until April 1967 when it was withdrawn from 5B Crewe South to be scrapped. Its first allocation on entering service was to 5A Crewe North shed, as seen above, where it remained for most of its working life before being allocated to 5B Crewe South shed in May 1965.
