Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 G2A class No 49063 draws forward slowly after being serviced on 29th June 1957. Built as No 1864 by Crewe works in May 1899 as a member of the LNWR's A class, No 49063 was rebuilt in June 1909 as a member of the LNWR's D class before being rebuilt twice by the LMS. First in March 1930 as a G1 class locomotive and again in September 1946 as a G2A locomotive in which form it remained until August 1959 when it was withdrawn from 3A Bescot shed to be scrapped by Crewe works. It was the rebuilding of the D class which gave rise to their nickname 'Super D's'. The G2A class were upgraded from LNWR Class G1 principally by the fitting of a higher pressure boiler. Some of the G2As subsequently received lower pressure boilers on overhaul, taking them back into Class G1. For clarification, the G2 class was unique amongst classes of LNWR eight coupled tender engines as they were not rebuilt from or into other classes.
