The significant improvement to passenger comfort was not just the more substantial building, being larger and built of brick, it was the provision of a large canopy which went the full length of the building and projected out top cover the full width of the platform. On days when the rain would swirl with a strong wind this would help to shelter passengers even if it was only the length of a carriage which would benefit.
