Birmingham New Street - Southern Approaches: lnwrbhm_sa431b

Close up of image 'lnwrbhm_sa431' showing the bridge at the start of the Vauxhall viaduct which formed part of the Birmingham Canal's tunnel. The Digbeth branch of the Birmingham Navigation Canal terminated to the right of this photograph at the rear of Banbury Wharf sidings. This section of the canal was initially used by both the L & BR and GJR as an interchange wharf for transhipping goods between rail and canal. The severity of the climb and sharpness of the curve is easily seen in this photograph with both the down and up lines being equipped with check rails. Two solid 'V' sections of metal can be seen on the left of the line at the commencement of the viaduct, Malcolm Peakman writes, 'their purpose being is to divert any derailed wheels back into line and away from the parapet.'
